I have been researching my LUXTON ancestors for over a decade now so thought it was time to put all the information in one place for all to see. I have had a lot of help along the way especially from all the wonderful people at the Luxton FHS

Eliza Jane Luxton was my great great maternal grandmother. She was the eldest surviving child of William Charles Luxton & Elizabeth Ellen (nee Newberry). She was born in Chard, Somerset on 3rd Jul 1857. On the 1861 census she was living with her parents at 10 Margarets Hill, Chard and described as a 3 year old scholar. In 1871 the family had moved to Chilson Common, Chard & Eliza was a scholar aged 13. By 1881, Eliza had left home and was living at the "British Royal Infirmary" Marlborough St. Bristol. She was described as a 23 year old Nurse (inst serv). Brian Luxton from the Luxton FHS has told me that Eliza was a qualified nurse on a salary of £30 a year at the Great Western Railway Residential Hospital, New Swindon. Eliza left her employment when she married in Dec 1883.

On 22 Dec 1883 she married my great great grandfather James Notley, after banns, at St Marks Church New Swindon. Photo taken circa 1887

James was a 26 year old bachelor living at 29 Oriel Street, a machineman, whose father Robert Notley was described as a builder. Eliza was a 26 year old spinster living at the New Hospital working as a nurse. Her father, William Charles Luxton, was described as a Lace Hand. Both signed the register & Henry Robert Notley (James's brother) & Lois Ann Luxton (Eliza's sister) were witnesses. 1891 CENSUS - 62 Westcott Place, New Swindon, Wiltshire

Interestingly, there is a family living next door called Cripps. The wife's name is Rosina & the daughter's name is Florence. Eliza used the same names when her 3rd daughter was born the following year.

On the 8 Apr 1897 she was confirmed by the Lord Bishop Gloucester & Bristol into St Mark's Church, New Swindon. We have this little book 'Helps to Worship' in our possession. Photographer Edwin Grant from The London Stereoscopic Company. 2 Cambria Villas, Swindon Wilts

Eliza died at St Margaret's Hospital, Swindon on 22 Jul 1952 aged 95 years. She was taken by AE Smith & son funeral Directors from their hospital to their private chapel of rest before being buried at Radner Street Cemetery, Swindon. According to the records at AE Smiths the grave was re-opened (meaning someone had been buried there previously). The grave number was possibly 70a. The address of Eliza the day she died was 15 Williams Street, Swindon. According to the people at the cemetery the grave was purchased on 19 Jan 1931 by James Notley. Their daughter Ivy Lillian Notley was buried there on 21 Jan 1931. James Notley was buried next & then Eliza.

This brooch & hair slide belonged to Eliza & is in our possession Their first child & my great grandmother, Ellen Matilda Notley, was born on 29 Sep 1884 at New Swindon, Wiltshire. She married Walter Elvy Eastland in 1908 & died on 6 Mar 1940 in Minster, Kent.

Henry James Notley was baptised at St Marks Church, New Swindon on 30 May 1886. He was the father of Lois Brown (who has been mentioned before as a great source of family history). Louisa Emily Notley was baptised at St Marks on 12th June 1887 but sadly died in infancy. The family were living at 62, Westcott Street, Swindon at the time of her baptism. She died in 1888 aged 1. Photo taken circa 1887

Rosina Florence Dorothy Notley was born on 18 June 1892 at Swindon, Wiltshire. She was baptised at St Marks Church on 4 Sep 1892. She married Harry Wheeler at the same church on 22 Dec 1923 on her parents 40th wedding anniversary. Her marriage certificate states that Harry Wheeler was a 32 year old Bachelor living at 74 Kingsdown Road, Upper Stratton. He was a clerk & his deceased father, John Wheeler had been a groom. Rosina Florence Dorothy Notley was a 31 year old spinster living at 15 Williams Street. Her father James Notley, was a machineman & she was a teacher. Both signed the certificate. The witnesses were a Arthur R Hayward & Ivy L Notley, Dorothy's sister.Rosina was known to the family as Aunt Dorothy. She had one son, David, who became a professor of Maths. When my grandmother passed away we found her address book & in it was the address of a David Wheeler living in Canada. I wrote to him asking about the family & a reply came back with his e-mail address. We corresponded for a few weeks & then the e-mails stopped. Later I learned that he had been suffering with cancer & had passed away. We only knew each other for a short time, but he kindly sent copies of all the certificates he had and told me his parents were buried in Lake on the Isle of Wight. I had been walking passed the same cemetery for years, taking my youngest daughter to school.Dorothy died on 4 Mar 1953 (only 8 months after her mother) aged 60. She died at the Isle of Wight County Hospital in Ryde but she had been living at 6 Cliff Gardens, Lake, Isle of Wight. I did find her grave stone but unfortunately I couldn't find an obituary in the local paper.

Ivy Lillian Notley was born in 1898 and died in January 1931. She's buried with her parents at Radner Street Cemetery, Swindon. On the back it says "Mother Dear" Hill Stoud Arcade, Oxford. On the back it says "Mother love from Ivy" 15/2/17

My grandmother told me that Ivy suffered from Epileptic Fits. Her mother was adament that she should never marry because of her condition. Ivy had a secret love and when she died they found an engagement ring. The inside of the ring was engraved with two names ~ Ivy & George. We still have the ring which now belongs to my daughter Lisa. We also have a pin that belonged to her.

Ellen Matilda Luxton died October 16th 1858

In 1851 Charles was a 15 year old lacehand and in the 1861 census for 10 Margaret's Hill South Chard he was still a lacehand. By 1871 he was a lacemaker but by 1881 he and most of his family had moved to 5 Belvoir Terrace, Derby Rd, Nottingham, another centre of the lace trade, where he was still working as a lacemaker. His wife was a lace mender and his daughter Matilda was a lace winder.

His marriage certificate does not give either his or his wife's second christian names: it is witnessed by a Mary Newberry, probably a sister of Elizabeth Ellen. His wife came from Bridport & was the daughter of William Newberry, a lacehand & Louisa Newberry nee Aplin, who had been married on 12 Oct 1828.

After William Newberry's death in 1842, Louisa and four of her children (Elizabeth Ellen, Matilda, Joseph & William) were removed from the Parish of Chard back to Beaminster in Dorset where Louisa was born. They were receiving parish relief in Chard at a time when parish funds were low and the Churchwardens & Overseers of the Poor therefore had removed from Chard any recipients of relief who did not have a legal settlement there.

We have copies of the documents relating to this removal, dated January 1849. The ages given for the children on these documents are two & three years below their true ages in all cases - possibly to ensure that they stayed with their mother. There were two older children not named in the removal: William who may have died before these events took place, and Thomas James whose great grand daughter Mary Quinney nee Newberry gave us this information. Two other children of the Newberry family died in infancy, John Earle Newberry & William Earle Newberry, both named after their paternal grand mother Eleanor Earle. Louisa herself was the base born daughter of Elizabeth Aplin born 11 Jul 1808 & baptised 10 Jun 1810 at Beaminster.

Ellen Matilda Luxton: was born 2 Sep 1855 & died 16 Oct 1858. She was buried at St Mary's Church, Chard, Somerset on 19 Oct 1858 (aged 3). The entry in the burial register states the family living at Perry Street.

Eliza Jane Luxton* Eliza married James Notley on 22 Dec 1883 at St Mark's Church New Swindon. James Notley was a machine-man & Eliza was the resident nurse for the Great Western Railway at Swindon, having trained at Bristol Infirmary. We are in contact with their great grand daughter Lois Brown of Fordingbridge.

William James Luxton: William was born in Chard on 5 Feb 1859. He was a 2 year old living with his parents at 10 Margarets Hill Chard in 1861 & by 1871 he was 12 year old scholar. He married Lydia Hayball in 1878 at Chard. Banns of marriage were read at Chard in 1878 - James Luxton of this parish, bachelor & Lydia Hayball of this parish, spinster ~ November 24th, December 1st & December 8th - CH Norwood.

Matilda Luxton: Matilda was born on 10 Mar 1861 at Chard, Somerset. In 1871 she was a 10 year old scholar & by the 1881 census she was described as a 21 year old Lace Cotton Winder. She married George Jeffard on 18 Sep 1887 at Nottingham.

Eunice Ellen Luxton: Eunice Ellen was born 17 Jan 1863 at Chard, Somerset. On the 1871 census she was described as an 8 year old lace hand living with her parents in Chard. In 1881 she was working as a general servant, aged 1, in the house of Martha Parnell at Westbury On Trym in Gloucestershire. Four years later she married Willie James Charlesworth in 1885. They were married at the Parish Church in Radford on Christmas Eve 1885 after Banns. Willie James Charlesworth was a 21 year old bachelor living at 26 Prince Street and was a mechanic. His father, George Charlesworth, was a frame work knitter. Eunice Ellen Luxton was a 22 year old spinster living at 5 Addington Rd. Her father, William Charles Luxton, was a lace hand. Both signed the register & Jesse Charlesworth & Matilda Luxton were witnesses (Matilda being Eunice Ellen's sister). They had nine children, Eunice Ellen born 1886, Lillian born 1887, Ernest born 1889, Louisa born 1891, William born 1895, Arnold born 1899 Percy born 1902, Leslie born 1903 and May born 1905.

The four girls never married. Ernest married 'Flossie' and had a son Bob. May Charlesworth who still lives at Malvern has a funeral card of her Uncle Fred, where the name is spelled Frederick Newbury. Alf Luxtn has a bible presented to Eunice Ellen from a friend dated Thursday 17th January 1884 ~ almost certainly a 21st birthday present.

Lois Ann Luxton: Lois was born on 13 Jan 1865 at Chard, Somerset. In 1871 she was living with her family at Chilson Common in Chard. On the 1881 census Lois is recorded at 2 Pritchard Street, St Pauls, Bristol as an unmarried servant, aged 16. We have been unable to find her in the 1891 Census although we do have a reference found in my great, great Grandmother's papers dated 7 April 1881 from Bristol Royal Infirmary for an Ann Luxton, a nurse who had trained there from 10 July 1878. We do not know to whom this refers but the possibility exists that it was Lois Ann. It would seem, from Rice family legend that at some stage Lois Ann must have moved to Cullen near Banff, because she met John Henry Rice there, and as late as the early 1980's there were still Luxtons living in Cullen.

Lois Ann was a nurse, and we believe she came to Stoke to nurse Alice Mary, John Henry's first wife. At Christmas 1897 she was living at 121 London Road Stoke, as we have been shown a Christmas card she sent to John Henry in that year.

She married John Henry Rice at Stoke on 15 Aug 1898.

1901 Census - Linton Ville, Regent Street, Stoke on Trent - John H Rice - Head - M - 61 - Railway Manager - Cheshire, Prestbury ... Lois A Rice - Wife - M - 36 - Somerset, Petworth ... Henry R Rice - Son - 1 - Staffs, Stoke on Trent

We think she may have nursed in India at some stage, and the family has a christening gown of silk that she bought back from India. This was made for Henry Richard's christening and has been used for all their descendents since.

She died 30 Mar 1920 leaving £1,297.11.3, probate being granted to her husband and son.

Alfred Charles Luxton:

Alfred Charles was born 16 Nov 1866 in Chard & died 1 Jun 1869 at Chard. His death is registered just as Alfred Luxton.

Henrietta Luxton: Henrietta was born in Chard on 13 May 1869.

On the 1871 & 1881 census she is described as a scholar & in 1891, still living at home with her family in Radford, she is described as a 21 year old lace mender.

Henrietta married Thomas Charles Phasey on 13 Mar 1897 in Radford Nottingham.

1901 Census - 8 Edith Terrace, Radford

Thos C Pheasey - Head - M - 34 - Gas Fitter - Salop, Shrewsbury ... Henrietta Pheasey - Wife - M - 31 - Lace mender ?Levers? - Somerset, Chard ... Ernest Pheasey - Nephew - 13 - Barbers Apprentice - London, Middlesex

Not much is known about the family apart from them living in London in the years following the Second World War. Lois Brown remembers her as having 'snow white hair and jet black eyebrows. She was very jolly and made a joke about an Italian ancestor, but her husband said she was related to the monkey on the music box played by an Italian.' Henrietta died 29 Oct 1955 at 1 Swanscombe Road, Chiswick, leaving £2,082.12.2.

Frederick Newberry Luxton: Fredrick Newbury Luxton was born on 22 Dec 1870 in Chard. On the 1871 census he was 3 months old & by the time he was 10, in 1881, he was a scholar. The 1891 census describes him as a 21 year old Lace Threader living with his parents at 34 Burkin Ave, Radford.

He married Mary Jane Dykes in Nottingham on 5 Aug 1893.

1901 Census - 17 Denison Street, Old Radford, Nottingham

Fred Luxton - Head - M - 30 - Lacemaker - Chard, Somerset ... Jane Luxton - Wife - M - 30 - Nottingham ... Clarice Luxton - Daur - 6 - Nottingham

He died 9 Jun 1937 at 27 Belper Rd, Nottingham, leaving £1,685.1.8. Mary Jane died 12 Aug 1939 leaving £37.16.8. She was known to the family as Polly. They had two children, Clarice & Ivy.

Walter Henry Luxton: Walter Henry Luxton was born on 1 Jan 1873 in Chard & died 15 Oct 1898 at Nottingham. He married Elsie May in Nottingham in 1893. As far as we know he had one son, Sidney. We are told that he enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry in 1891 aged 18, and died 15 Oct 1898. He is commemorated on his father's tombstone in Nottingham. As we have been given this information further research is needed to find out if both father & son died on the same day?

Alfred William Luxton: Alfred William Luxton was born on 10 Nov 1875 in Chard. In 1881 he is described as a 5 year old scholar & in 1891 he is a 15 year old General Labourer.

He had a son called Harry born 5 Dec 1897 prior to his marriage, by a Hannah Mary Ann Wright in Leicester. This son called himself Harry Wright and died in 1974 in Canada.

Alfred married Ada Mather 21 Jul 1902 and stood as a Labour candidate in the Rotherham municipal elections three times, losing to the liberal candidate each time. He joined the Yorks. & Lancs. Regiment in 1915. He had a large family of eight of whom our informant Alf Luxton was the youngest.

Elizabeth Emily Luxton: was known as Bessie. She married a George Henry Pinkstone in Nottingham in 1904: Alf Luxton had a photograph of the couple.

Elizabeth Luxton born 25 Feb 1850 at Tiverton died 21 Sep 1851 at Tiverton
Emily Luxton born 3 Dec 1852 at Tiverton

We have failed to locate the birth or baptism of Charles Luxton, though we have a date of birth from a book, inscribed "Charles Luxton his book. Tiverton Devon 1846" in which he recorded preachers and their texts from 1846 to 1862. This also gives the dates of birth of his family and some deaths.

According to all four censuses from 1851 to 1881, Charles was born in Taunton: however Brian Luxton (founder of the Luxton FHS) knows of no baptisms at either St Mary Magdalene or St James, Taunton that confirm this.

There is a baptism of Charles Powell (possibly illegitimate) son of Margaret Powell at Taunton St James on 9 Jan 1814, two months after our Charles' birth. Margaret Powell married Joseph Luxton later that year, so we assume this to be our Charles.

(Another possibility is that Charles was born at Tawton near Okehampton, as descendants of a Thomas Luxton born there bear the same unusual names as two of Charles' descendents, Matilda and Henrietta: however no baptism was found at Tawton, and we no longer regard this as a significant possibility.)

He refers to himself in his book as a Bible Christian, a group later incorporated into the Methodists. Details of his marriage were obtained from Briam Luxton.

In 1841 Charles & Charlotte were living at Concord Place, Tancred Street, Taunton: he was a lacemaker & she was a lace mender.

By 1851 they were living at Viney Court, West Exe, Tiverton with their four eldest surviving children, William Charles, James Rechab, Alfred (2) and Elizabeth. Also living there was Charlotte's mother, Mary Townsend, aged 73 and described as a pauper.

In 1861 they were still living at West Exe, Charles was a porter, Charlotte still a lace mender & only two children, Alfred & Emily, remained at home. There was also an 11 year old boarder named Mary Musgrove from Taunton.

By 1871 they were living at West Exe South - probably the same place - and Charles was a draper's porter, Charlotte a lace worker. Only Emily the youngest daughter remained, along with another boarder, Jane Skinner aged 71. West Exe South still exists in Tiverton but contains only 20th century buildings, many of them post war redevelopments.

In 1881, still at the same address Charles was a general labourer now aged 67. Emily, a skeiner in a lace factory was still at home, unmarried and there was a different boarder, Mary Towell, aged 21 - could this be another powell misread or Misheard?

Of Charles' children the first five were born in Taunton, all the others being born in Tiverton. As can be seen from the above five died in childhood & of the others James was a lacehand at the age of 10, Alfred (2) was a labourer at the age of 17 & Emily was a lace worker at the age of 18.

A short history of Taunton in the 19th century:

In 1801 Taunton had a population of 5,794. By the standards of the time it was a fair sized town. A hospital was built in Taunton in 1812. Yet another new market house was built in 1822. After 1821 Taunton had gas street lighting. After 1858 it had piped water and in the 1870s sewers were built. In the late 19th century public parks were laid out. Vivary Park is named after the vivaria or fishponds that existed there in the Middle Ages.

Taunton expanded rapidly. In the 1830s and 1840s the Trinity area was built up. Several new churches were built in the 19th century. Trinity church was built in 1842. St John The Evangelist was built in 1863. St Andrews was built in 1881. The railway reached Taunton in 1842. Queens College was built in 1843. It was named after Queen Victoria. Taunton school opened in 1847. Kings College opened in 1880.

Joseph Luxton m. Margaret Powell

Joseph Luxton
Born circa 1784
Baptised 30 May 1784 at Mary Magdalane, Taunton
Died ?
Parents John Luxton & Mary Redwood

Children
Charles Luxton* born 3 Nov 1813 at Taunton, Somerset died 8 Jul 1885 at Tiverton, Devon
Robert Luxton born abt. 1816

We know little of Joseph Luxton and Margaret Powell except that they did not marry until after the birth and baptism of Charles. We know that Margaret was a widow at the time of their marriage.

There is a marriage of Robert Powell & Peggy Gore at St James, Taunton on 15 Apr 1805. As Peggy is a diminutive of Margaret, this may be our Margaret: Their grand daughter was Eliza Gore Luxton, adding weight to this supposition.

We have no direct evidence for the father of Charles Luxton. Because Margaret was a widow at the time of her marriage to Joseph Luxton, Charles' father could be one of:

a) Joseph Luxton, because of her subsequent marriage to him
b) Her first husband, Robert based on the above supposition
c) Other person unknown

All our history back from Charles birth is based on supposition a), but further work is needed to verify this.

Apart from the fact that they lived at Corner House, Bampton, we know no more of John & Mary than is shown above. Of their children other than Joseph we know the following:

Their eldest son, John Luxton, before his marriage, had an illegitimate child by Mary a Mary Garland, who was know as John Garland alias Luxton. (This John married as John Luxton, but many of his children were christened Garland Luxton). John, a carpenter & joiner then married Ann Webb on 30 Nov 1801 at Witton St George in Somerset & had 8 children, of whom William became a master builder, James became a carpenter & Mary Ann became a dress maker. Ann was a widow by the 1851 census, and was living at Twiler Court, Taunton, with her son James.

Robert Luxton m. Jane Daniell

Robert Luxton
Born circa 1664
Died 1751 at Petton
Buried 14 Jan 1751 at St Petrocks Church, Petton, Bampton, Devon
Married Jane Daniell on 28 Aug 1704 in Clayhanger, Devon

William Luxton born Abt. 1709
Jacob Luxton born Abt. 1715
Sarah Luxton born Abt. 1716
Joseph Luxton* born Abt. 1719

Robert Luxton was married as Robert Luxon at St Peter's, Clayhanger, Devon & Jane as Jane Danell, not Jane Daniell. Their 7 children were christened Luxon or Luxen, but we presume they are all the same family: though the baptism of the 5th child, Jacob, has not been found, his relationship is known from an indenture dated 1745. Robert & Jane farmed approximately 16 acres at Frogpit Moor, Petton: they were also buried Luxon.

We no nothing of the first four children.

Jacob Luxton married Susannah Lake at Bampton on 6 Dec 1747 and lived at Hutchings Farm, Petton, which he bought from his father in 1745 for £30. They had three children. Susannah married again after Jacob's death, to John Merson on 4 Sep 1763 she survived her first husband by 30 years, and was buried at Petton on 19 July 1789.

Sarah Luxton married Michael Wilson of Sampford Peverell on 3 Aug 1756, also at Bampton.
