Eliza Jane Luxton was my great great maternal grandmother. She was the eldest surviving child of William Charles Luxton & Elizabeth Ellen (nee Newberry). She was born in Chard, Somerset on 3rd Jul 1857. On the 1861 census she was living with her parents at 10 Margarets Hill, Chard and described as a 3 year old scholar. In 1871 the family had moved to Chilson Common, Chard & Eliza was a scholar aged 13. By 1881, Eliza had left home and was living at the "British Royal Infirmary" Marlborough St. Bristol. She was described as a 23 year old Nurse (inst serv). Brian Luxton from the Luxton FHS has told me that Eliza was a qualified nurse on a salary of £30 a year at the Great Western Railway Residential Hospital, New Swindon. Eliza left her employment when she married in Dec 1883.
On 22 Dec 1883 she married my great great grandfather James Notley, after banns, at St Marks Church New Swindon. Photo taken circa 1887
James was a 26 year old bachelor living at 29 Oriel Street, a machineman, whose father Robert Notley was described as a builder. Eliza was a 26 year old spinster living at the New Hospital working as a nurse. Her father, William Charles Luxton, was described as a Lace Hand. Both signed the register & Henry Robert Notley (James's brother) & Lois Ann Luxton (Eliza's sister) were witnesses. 1891 CENSUS - 62 Westcott Place, New Swindon, Wiltshire

Interestingly, there is a family living next door called Cripps. The wife's name is Rosina & the daughter's name is Florence. Eliza used the same names when her 3rd daughter was born the following year.
On the 8 Apr 1897 she was confirmed by the Lord Bishop Gloucester & Bristol into St Mark's Church, New Swindon. We have this little book 'Helps to Worship' in our possession. Photographer Edwin Grant from The London Stereoscopic Company. 2 Cambria Villas, Swindon Wilts

Eliza died at St Margaret's Hospital, Swindon on 22 Jul 1952 aged 95 years. She was taken by AE Smith & son funeral Directors from their hospital to their private chapel of rest before being buried at Radner Street Cemetery, Swindon. According to the records at AE Smiths the grave was re-opened (meaning someone had been buried there previously). The grave number was possibly 70a. The address of Eliza the day she died was 15 Williams Street, Swindon. According to the people at the cemetery the grave was purchased on 19 Jan 1931 by James Notley. Their daughter Ivy Lillian Notley was buried there on 21 Jan 1931. James Notley was buried next & then Eliza.
This brooch & hair slide belonged to Eliza & is in our possession Their first child & my great grandmother, Ellen Matilda Notley, was born on 29 Sep 1884 at New Swindon, Wiltshire. She married Walter Elvy Eastland in 1908 & died on 6 Mar 1940 in Minster, Kent.
Henry James Notley was baptised at St Marks Church, New Swindon on 30 May 1886. He was the father of Lois Brown (who has been mentioned before as a great source of family history). Louisa Emily Notley was baptised at St Marks on 12th June 1887 but sadly died in infancy. The family were living at 62, Westcott Street, Swindon at the time of her baptism. She died in 1888 aged 1. Rosina Florence Dorothy Notley was born on 18 June 1892 at Swindon, Wiltshire. She was baptised at St Marks Church on 4 Sep 1892. She married Harry Wheeler at the same church on 22 Dec 1923 on her parents 40th wedding anniversary. Her marriage certificate states that Harry Wheeler was a 32 year old Bachelor living at 74 Kingsdown Road, Upper Stratton. He was a clerk & his deceased father, John Wheeler had been a groom. Rosina Florence Dorothy Notley was a 31 year old spinster living at 15 Williams Street. Her father James Notley, was a machineman & she was a teacher. Both signed the certificate. The witnesses were a Arthur R Hayward & Ivy L Notley, Dorothy's sister.Rosina was known to the family as Aunt Dorothy. She had one son, David, who became a professor of Maths. When my grandmother passed away we found her address book & in it was the address of a David Wheeler living in Canada. I wrote to him asking about the family & a reply came back with his e-mail address. We corresponded for a few weeks & then the e-mails stopped. Later I learned that he had been suffering with cancer & had passed away. We only knew each other for a short time, but he kindly sent copies of all the certificates he had and told me his parents were buried in Lake on the Isle of Wight. I had been walking passed the same cemetery for years, taking my youngest daughter to school.Dorothy died on 4 Mar 1953 (only 8 months after her mother) aged 60. She died at the Isle of Wight County Hospital in Ryde but she had been living at 6 Cliff Gardens, Lake, Isle of Wight. I did find her grave stone but unfortunately I couldn't find an obituary in the local paper.
Ivy Lillian Notley was born in 1898 and died in January 1931. She's buried with her parents at Radner Street Cemetery, Swindon. On the back it says "Mother Dear" Hill Stoud Arcade, Oxford. On the back it says "Mother love from Ivy" 15/2/17
My grandmother told me that Ivy suffered from Epileptic Fits. Her mother was adament that she should never marry because of her condition. Ivy had a secret love and when she died they found an engagement ring. The inside of the ring was engraved with two names ~ Ivy & George. We still have the ring which now belongs to my daughter Lisa. We also have a pin that belonged to her.
